Karna a hero or villain

Karna is one of complex characters of Mahabharata. First he is seen coming and making fun of Arjuna at the Tournament of Kuru princes. When Bhima finds out that Karna is son of charioteer. Bhima insults him. But Karna hates Arjuna instead of Bhima. Then Duryodhana makes him King of Anga knowing that Karna is equivalent to Arjuna. Karna is always jealous of the fame and archery skills of Arjuna.

Karna joins Duryodhana and Sakuni in plotting against the pandavas. First Karna, sakuni, duryodhana join hands to kill pandavas in wax house.

Next Karna meets Arjuna disguised as brahmin at draupadi's swayamvar. He fights with Arjuna disguised and finds it unable to defeat Arjuna so he gives up the fighting. When it is later revealed that the disguised brahmin was Arjuna. Karna hates Arjuna more.

Next Karna insults draupadi by calling her a whore. It is Karna who instigates Dussasana to strip Draupadi of her clothes. Then Bhima vows to tear the chest of Dussasana and drink his blood.

Karna instigates duryodhana to make fun of pandavas when they are living in forest. They try to mock pandavas but they themselves are defeated by gandarvas. Karna runs away from battlefield leaving Duryodhana to gandarvas.

Karna is again defeated at Virat yudh by Arjuna and runs away from battle field. Arjuna defeats all wariors one by one in Virat yudh and atlast uses Sammohanastra as prince uttara is tired and makes all wariors including Karna unconscious.

Karna next urges Duryodhana not to make peace with Pandavas. He boasts that he can defeat all pandavas single handedly. Bhishma scolds for his boastfulness saying he lost to Arjuna many times.

Nice post indeed.
But some tiny correction needed,

During the fight between Karna and Arjuna at Draupadi's swayamvar , Karna retreated from the clash only when Arjuna threatened to use the Brahmastra .

So just imagine at what level the fight was taking place which forced the great Arjuna to give a thought about Brahmastra.
How many warriors at that time had that capability.

Again if you read the Mahabharata,

Karna on numerous occassion had disapproved Shakuni's evil conspiracy.

Karna was a hero for all those whom he fought for, for all those he lived for.

He was a villain to all those who opposed Duryodhan.

In general he was a great giver to humankind.

In Kurukshetra war he fought for both the camps.
He gave Yuddhistir a chance to live,if he had killed Yuddhistir at that time it would have brought the war to an end at that very momemt.
He could have also held Yuddhisthir captive.
All these could have meant Duryodhan Victory, which he never wanted.

Karna did not retreat when Arjuna thretened to use Brahmastra.

karna retreated because he thought warrior before him was unconquerable.

As to other point of you saying karna would have ended war by killing yudhistira. Arjuna could also have ended war by killing duryodhana.

Yes Arjuna definately could have killed Duryodhan with ease. only moron would deny this fact.

Even Duryodhan knew that, thats why even bieng the technically the greatest mace fight fighter he couldn't collect the courage to fight Arjuna.
He always attack Arjuna under cover of Great Bhisma, Mighty Guru Drona and Danveer Karna.

Arjuna is pride of India.

Coming to your answer,
you didn't got the point i wanted to make.

Arjuna didn't killed Duryodhan ,becs he loved to see him alive.
He kept giving him lifelines, becs Bhimsen wasn't able to kill Duryodhan for 18 days for many various reason.

But incase of Karna the situation is completely different.
Karna only promised to not to kill Yuddhisthira.

Again one point to highlight Karna's might.
Arjuna swear to kill Jayadratha within a day,but while swearing to kill Karna he didn't fixed any definative timeline and his vow was like that either I will Kill Karna or he will me.

Nobody stopped him from capturing Yuddhistira.
But he didn't do that also .
He had already defeated Bhimsen,Satyaki, Dhristtadyum ,Nakul and Sahadev and upapandavs.

Arjun was also busy fighting at some other area.
Yuddhistir was helpless at that time.

Again i don't want to debate who was greater, but any warrior who makes Arjuna resort to Brahmastra has to be admired.

Karna too had barhmastra. When astras clash it has a terrible impact on nearby surroundings. This is revealed when vyasa scolds ashwatthama when he fired the brahma weapon. Such weapons discretion has to be used. It was karna greatnes that he didnt fire the brahmaweapon a sign of a great man.

it was not Karnas greatness that he did not fire brahmastra. He retreated because he thought warrior before him was unconquerable. What Aswathama fired is Brahmasira not Brahmastra. Bhima and Satyaki both defeated Karna one or two times.
