Karna a hero or villain

Karna is one of complex characters of Mahabharata. First he is seen coming and making fun of Arjuna at the Tournament of Kuru princes. When Bhima finds out that Karna is son of charioteer. Bhima insults him. But Karna hates Arjuna instead of Bhima. Then Duryodhana makes him King of Anga knowing that Karna is equivalent to Arjuna. Karna is always jealous of the fame and archery skills of Arjuna.

Karna joins Duryodhana and Sakuni in plotting against the pandavas. First Karna, sakuni, duryodhana join hands to kill pandavas in wax house. Next Karna insults draupadi by calling her a whore. Karna instigates duryodhana to make fun of pandavas when they are living in forest. They try to mock pandavas but they themselves are defeated by gandarvas. Karna runs away from battlefield leaving Duryodhana to gandarvas.

As i have read in some blogs these days because of TV serials and movies. The great Pandavas are considered as cowards and evil souls like Duryodhana and Karna are considered as great men. Bhima is shown as a fat, greedy and short tempered warrior.

But Bhima is not as such. Bhima is the second hero of Mahabharata after Arjuna. He is extremely strong and is not afraid of anyone. He defeated Karna many times during Mahabharata war and forced him to retreat chariotless. Karna once defeated Bhima by hiding in his chariot. On 17th day of Mahabharata war Karna insulted Yudhistira. Then Bhima vowed to kill Karna. Bhima fought with Karna and made him unconscious. He was about to cut of the tongue of Karna but Shalya stopped him and told him Arjuna has vowed to kill Karna so leave him. Thus Bhima spared Karna. In TV serials they did not show this scene. This is available in Mahabharata translation by Kisan Mohan Ganguli.

Comparing Bhima and Duryodhana. Bhima was much stronger than Duryodhana but Duryodhana has more skill in mace than Bhima. Bhima is the protector of remaining pandavas including Arjuna during burning of wax house.

The gods, the danavas, the gandharvas, the nagas, the yakshas, the birds, the great rishis versed in the Vedas, the pitris that subsist upon the gifts called svadha, and asceticism and the sciences, and the (celestial) herbs with diverse virtues, came, O monarch, and took up their stations in the welkin, making a great noise. Brahman, with the regenerate rishis and the Lords of creatures, and Bhava himself on his car, came to that part of the welkin. Beholding those two high-souled ones, Karna and Dhananjaya, about to encounter each other, Shakra himself said, "Let Arjuna vanquish Karna." Surya, however, said, "Let Karna vanquish Arjuna. Indeed, let my son Karna, slaying Arjuna, gain the victory in this battle. Let my son, slaying Karna, win victory." Even thus did Surya and Vasava, those two foremost of personages, who were there and had adopted opposite sides, dispute with each other. Beholding those two high-souled ones, Karna and Dhananjaya, about to engage themselves in battle, the gods and the asuras adopted opposite sides. The three worlds with the celestial rishis and all the gods and all other creatures, trembled at the sight. The gods were on the side of Partha, while the asuras were on that of Karna. Thus all creatures were interested in that encounter, siding with this or that leader of car-warriors, the Kuru or the Pandava hero. Beholding the Self-born Lord of Creation (viz., Brahman), the gods urged him, saying, "Let, O god, the success of these two lions among men be equal. Let not the vast universe be destroyed in consequence of this encounter between Karna and Arjuna. O Selfborn one, say but the word, let the success of these two be equal." Hearing these words, Maghavat, bowing down unto the Grandsire, represented this unto that god of gods, that foremost one of all intelligent beings, saying, "Formerly it was said by thy holy self that the two Krishnas are always sure to win victory. Let it be (now) as thou then saidest. Be gratified with me, O holy one!" At this, Brahman and Isana replied unto the chief of the celestials, saying, 'The victory of the high-souled Vijaya is certain, of that Savyasaci who gratified the eater of sacrificial libations in the forest of Khandava and who, coming to heaven, rendered assistance to thee, O Sakra! Karna is on the side of the Danavas. It is proper, therefore, that he should meet with defeat. By this, without doubt, the purposes of the gods will be achieved. One's own business, O chief of the celestials, should always be important. The high-souled Phalguna, again, is devoted to truth and to morality. He must always be victorious, without doubt. He by whom the high-souled and holy god having the bull on his standard was gratified, why should not he, O thou of a hundred eyes, be victorious,--he, that is, who hath for the driver of his car that Lord of the universe, Vishnu himself? Possessed of great energy of mind and great strength, Partha is a hero, accomplished in arms and endued with ascetic merit. Possessed also of great energy of body, he beareth the entire science of weapons. Indeed, Partha hath every accomplishment. He ought to be victorious, since that would accomplish the purposes of the gods. In consequence of his greatness, Partha transgresses destiny itself, whether favourable or unfavourable, and when he does so, a great destruction of creatures takes place. When the two Krishnas are excited with wrath, they show regard for nothing. These two bulls among beings are the Creators of all real and unreal things. These two are Nara and Narayana, the two ancient and best of Rishis. There is none to rule over them. They are rulers over all, perfectly fearless, they are scorchers of all foes. In heaven or among human beings, there is none equal to either of them. The three worlds with the celestial Rishis and the Charanas are behind these two. All the gods and all creatures walk behind them. The entire universe exists in consequence of the power of these two. Let Karna, that bull among men, obtain these foremost of regions of bliss here. Let him obtain identity with the Vasus or the Maruts. Let him, with Drona and Bhishma, be worshipped in heaven, for Vikartana's son is brave and is a hero. Let the victory, however, belong to the two Krishnas." After those two foremost ones among the gods (Brahman and Isana), said so, the deity of a 1,000 eyes, worshipping those words of Brahman and Isana and saluting all creatures himself said, "Ye have heard what has been said by the two gods for the benefit of the universe. It will be even so and not otherwise. Stay ye then, with cheerful hearts." Hearing these words of Indra, all creatures, O sire, became filled with wonder and applauded, O king, that deity. The celestials then showered diverse kinds of fragrant flowers and blew their trumpets. Indeed, the gods, the Danavas and the Gandharvas all waited there for witnessing that matchless single combat between those two lions among men.

Arjuna's death in hands of Babruvahana (his own son)

After mahabharatha war. Yudhistir performed aswamedha yaga. The sacrificial horse is to roam freely and anyone who captures it will be considered enemy of yudhistira and Arjuna had to defeat him. The horse goes to manipur. Babruvahana, the son of Arjuna and chitrangada and prince of manipur knowing that his father comes to receive him with due honours. But Arjuna gets angry and tells him "i came as a representative of Yudhistir. I am your enemy not your friend you should fight me".

Arjuna rebuked his son in bitter words. Ulupi amother wife of Arjuna and stepmother to Babruvahana comes to babruvahana and tells him to fight his father. Babruvahana fights with Arjuna. Both fight fiercely. Babruvahana shoots an arrow that kills Arjuna. Later babruvahana faints. Chitrangada comes to know that her husband is killed and her son is wounded. Chitrangada comes to battlefield and grieves Arjuna's death. Chitrangada blames Ulupi for making Babruvahana fight with Arjuna

Babruvahana regains consciousness and knowing that he killed his father prepares to commit suicide. But Ulupi comes and stops him and tells him "this is an illusion created by me, Arjuna cannot be defeated by Indra himself. Arjuna's death was caused by the curse of vasus as Arjuna has killed his grandfather Bhishma in unjust way"

Ulupi then revives Arjuna with gem that can revive dead people. Arjuna wakes up and is happy to see both Ulupi and Chitrangada and Ulupi explains about the cause for his death. Arjuna is happy with what Ulupi did. Babruvahana asks Arjuna to come to his palace but Arjuna says he has to go and takes leave of Ulupi, chitrangada and Babruvahana

Actually he did not know that it was nagasthra as Karna himself did not know that snake aswasen entered the arrow. Aswasens mother was killed by Arjuna during the burning of Khandava forest. Arjuna is the greatest warrior in Mahabharata after Lord Krishna. In his name itself there is undefeatable (Jishnu).

Modern movies and plays have shown Karna as better warrior than Arjuna but this is not true.
Mrityunjaya : The Death Conqueror is just a fiction to make Karna the greatest warrior.

Reasons Why Arjuna is better warrior than Karna:
1) Karna tried to imprison Drupada with help of Kauravas and their army but he retreated. Where as Arjuna defeated and brought Drupada before Drona

2) Karna was defeated by Arjuna during Draupadi swayamvar.

3) Karna was defeated by Gandharvas and ran away from battlefield leaving Duryodhana to Gandharvas. He was not drunk at that time. Arjuna defeated Gandharvas and released Duryodhana from their hands

4) Arjuna single handedly defeated Bhishma,Drona, Karna etc in virata yudh and spared their lives

5) In Mahabharata in one instance Arjuna shot an asthra that would kill Karna But Aswathama saves Karna with his counter asthra.

6) Karna relied on shakthi weapon to kill Arjuna. But Arjuna relied on his prowess and strength.

7) Karna was defeated by Bhima many times and ran away from battlefield. Once Karna won against Bhima by hiding in his chariot.

8) Arjuna did not use pasupathathra against Karna. Pasupathasthra would have destroyed complete kaurava army in single day.

9) Arjuna defeated Lord Indra at khandava vanam.

10) Karna was defeated 2 times by Ahimanyu and ran away from battlefield. It was Karna who asks Drona how to kill Abhimanyu with deceit.

1) Arjuna never cheated his guru. Karna did by telling he was brahmin.

3) Arjuna did not cheat for winning, Karna did by attacking Abhimanyu from behind and breaking his bow.

4) Arjuna never boasted about himself. Karna boasted every time that he would kill Arjuna

Though I have to admit that Karna is also a great warrior though inferior to Arjuna. Karna is great soul in some aspects by giving to brahmins whatever they ask

Arjuna is greatest warrior and always virtuous soul. He was always following the righteous path. He is incarnation of Nara( a part of Lord Vishnu himself).

Arjuna is definitely better warrior than Karna. Arjuna defeated Karna many times in war like virata parva, on Jayadrathas death day etc. Karna ran away from battle field many times. But Arjuna has not run away from battle field even once.

Karna was defeated by Bhima many times and ran away from battlefield. Modern TV serials and movies have made Karna the greatest warrior though he is not.
